Special note for SF bay area attendees
If you’re driving from the bay area, be prepared for possible snow driving on Donner pass. And make sure to pack a warm jacket; the pass gets very cold! Snow is possible any time of year on Donner pass.
If the weather forecast predicts snow, read up on snow driving techniques and buy tire chains before you leave, since tire chains sold on the pass are typically poor quality and have a horrible markup. Do consider paying an installer on the pass to install your chains; they know how to install chains correctly, and you get to stay out of the wet and the cold.
